The Manhattan city codes office issues violation notices after investigations of complaints. The office also issues compliance stickers to landlords meeting all the relevant property maintenance standards. Unless otherwise noted, these are "first notices" designed simply to alert the property owner of the existence of a condition that needed attention, and a reader should assume that the problem was then resolved. In cases where a previously issued notice has not been adequately dealt with, issuance of a second notice or more serious action may be indicated.
