Headlines
No one should begrudge local taverns or liquor stores their profits from beer and alcohol sales. Those businesses provide recreation, contribute to the local economy, pay taxes and employ workers who also pay taxes.

Kentucky Sen. Jim Bunning didn't win his battle to block essential aid to unemployed Americans — fortunately — but he did get a consolation prize. The Kansas Legislature, a few steps behind several dozen of the state's cities and some of its counties, sent a clean-air ordinance — a smoking ban — to Gov. Mark Parkinson late last week. Given that he made such a law a priority in his State of the State address, the governor will likely sign it without delay.
