Will Klusener wklusener@themercury.com

A Clay Centerman was killed Sunday following a disputewith Clay County Sheriff's officers.

According to a release from the Clay County Sheriff's office, the officers shot 66-year-old Ronald Hughes after he pointed what they thought was a pistol in their direction. The officers were responding to a domestic violence call at the Hughes' residence in the 800 block of Lane in Clay Center.

When the officers arrived on the scene the woman, who was identified as Hughes' wife, had suffered lacerations to her head. Officers then tried to speak with Hughes. The report said Hughes confronted the officers outside his home and initially held one hand behind his back. After the officers repeatedly demanded that Hughes show his hands, he removed his hand and was brandishing what looked like a pistol. The officers ordered him to drop the gun, but Hughes instead pointed it at the officers and they shot him.
