Staff reports

Lima, Ohio — Manhattan High products and Kansas State women's golfers Emily and Elise Houtz shot two-round scores of 160 and 162, respectively, at the 109th Women's Western Amateur Championship at Shawnee Country Club. Emily's score qualified her for the championship flight, while Elise was placed as the No. 1 seed in the first flight.

Emily shot an opening-round score of 78, followed by a second round score of 82 on Tuesday to claim the 56th seed in the championship flight. The championship then moved to match play on Wednesday as Emily defeated No. 9 seed Emma Jandel, a junior from Ohio State, 1 up. She then squared up against No. 41 Marissa Steen of West Chester, Ohio, and defeated her 6 and 5 Thursday morning.

"Emily has been working hard on her game. She struggled in round two, but hung in there," K-State head coach Kristi Knight said. "She played great today and won her first round match in a hard fought battle." In the third round of match play, Emily faced 25th-seeded Mandi Morrow of Kent State and won 1 up on the 17th hole to advance to the quarterfinals. Emily will face No. 1 seed Christina Wong Friday morning.

Elise took the course Tuesday and struggled in the first round, shooting an 85, but bounced back with a 77 in the second round to finish tied for 64th. She then lost in a playoff to fall out of the championship flight, resulting in a No. 1 seed in the first flight. From there, Elise went on to win her first match, 7 and 5, Wednesday afternoon, shooting 2-under par in 13 holes. Elise advanced to the second round of match play, but lost to Corrine Rees from the University of Arkansas.
