Asprilla to visit K-State Oct. 16; Southwell here this weekend

Freddy Asprilla will visit Kansas State the weekend of Oct. 16, Art Alvarez said Thursday afternoon.

It will be the first official visit for Asprilla, who was unable to get released from his scholarship at Florida International after multiple efforts by both he and his former AAU coach, Alvarez.

Because of that, the 2008-09 men's basketball freshman Sun Belt Player of the Year has enrolled at Miami Dade Junior College, where he will play this season before moving onto a four-year college in 2010.

"If he likes it there, that's where he's gonna end up," Alvarez said by phone on Aug. 31.

Alvarez said earlier this month that Asprilla, who averaged more than 14 points and nine rebounds per game during his freshman season, will sign in the early signing period in November.

His visit to Manhattan marks the first day college basketball teams can begin practice, and is typically the date that several teams have "Midnight Madness," where thousands of fans race through the arena doors to get their first glimpse of the upcoming season's basketball teams.

Former K-State men's basketball coach Bob Huggins introduced "Madness in Manhattan" at K-State back in 2006 and it continued through last season.

However, men's basketball sports information director Tom Gilbert said Thursday afternoon there will be no such event this year.

Southwell visiting Wildcats this weekend

In addition to Asprilla, the Kansas State men's basketball coaching staff continues to work on its 2010 recruiting class. Shane Southwell, a 6-foot-6, 220-pound guard, will take an official visit to K-State this weekend, according to Gopowercat.com Southwell is a senior at Rice High School in New York City, the same high school that produced KState junior Curtis Kelly and Louisville's Edgar Sosa. He also plays AAU basketball with the New York Gauchos, the same organization both Kelly and K-State freshman Jordan Henriquez-Roberts played for during their high school days.

Southwell is ranked the No. 123 player in the country according to Rivals.com, and sports offers from K-State, Marquette, Providence, Xavier, South Carolina and St.John's.
