Kansas State women's tennis coach Steve Bietau announced on Thursday the signing of three student-athletes to national letters of intent for the 2009-10 season. The new additions to the Wildcats' roster are Karla Bonacic, Carmen Borau and Ana Gomez. All three student-athletes will enter K-State as freshmen.

"Starting with the size of the group, any time you have this many new faces on a small team, there is likely to be a big impact on the overall performance," said Bietau about his new charges. "I am especially excited because of the leadership and experience we have coming back. When this is combined with all the positives from this new group it opens up some great possibilities for K-State tennis."

K-State welcomes back four letterwinners to the 2009-10 roster: senior Natasha Vieira, junior Antea Huljev and sophomores Petra Chuda and Nina Sertic.

Bonacic is a native of Split, Croatia who teamed with Sertic, where Bietau saw her play for the first time. Bonacic registered a strong junior record in Croatia, where she ranked among the top-350 in the ITF rankings. During the 2009 season, Bonacic advanced to the Round of 32 at the Croatia Junior Championships.

Borau joins the Wildcats from San Bernardo, Spain. During her time in her native country, Borau captured a pair of Aragon Regional Junior titles (under-14 and under-16). She also earned a runner-up finish in the Aragon Regional Senior Championship last season. Borau also garnered a top-eight finish in the 2004 Nike Junior Tour Master National Under-14. At one time during her junior career, was among the top-60 in Spain.

Gomez is a product of Murcia, Spain and will be a rarity on the K-State roster, a lefthanded player. Gomez, like Borau, was ranked among the top-60 in Spain during her junior career.

Bietau feels the new additions will blend in well with the current roster, both on the court and in the classroom.

"On our best teams, there was usually a parallel between success in school and success on the court. While all these players will compete for a starting spot, they are also very strong in school as well. So there is a lot of work ahead, but this year's team is one that has a strong future."
