Houtz finishes top eight at Western Amateur

Kansas State women's golfer Emily Houtz was defeated by Christina Wong Friday morning at the 109th Women's Western Amateur Championship at Shawnee Country Club. Houtz finished in the top eight in the loaded championship flight.

Houtz, a Manhattan native, birdied the seventh hole and was able to tie Wong on the following two holes, but the former AJGA All-American was too much for Houtz.

Despite the loss it was a successful week for the junior-to-be. After the qualifying rounds were completed Houtz was seeded 56th out of 132 golfers and found a spot in the championship flight. Houtz then defeated the No. 9, No. 41 and No. 25 seeds in her flight.

Houtz shot an opening-round score of 78, followed by a second-round score of 82 on Tuesday. The championship then moved to match play on Wednesday as she defeated No. 9-seed Emma Jandel, a junior from Ohio State. She then squared up against No. 41 Marissa Steen of West Chester, Ohio, and defeated her Thursday morning.

In the third round of match play, Emily faced 25th-seeded Mandi Morrow of Kent State and won 1 up on the 17th hole to advance to the quarterfinals.
