Local coaches express concern over new summer rules
If it were up to Riley County head football coach Steve Wagner and Rock Creek head football coach Mike Beam, the rules instituted by the Kansas State High School Activities Association last fall more than likely wouldn't have even gotten to a vote.
The new rules, which were approved in a 42-26 vote last September, permit coaches in football, basketball and volleyball an eight-week time frame during the summer to have unrestricted contact with athletes in either team or individual settings.
"We don't really like it," said Wagner, the longtime Falcons' coach. "My first choice would be not to have the coaches get with their teams over the summer. Personally, I think our coaching staff and our football staff are pretty much in agreement on that. We feel like there's enough of a season the way it is and we're able to work on the things we need to work on."
